What Is Earth Day on the Rappahannock?
Set along the Rappahannock River, this free community event invites families to get outside, explore and learn together in celebration of Earth Day.
Each year, local organizations, businesses and community groups come together to highlight conservation, sustainability and outdoor education.
Designed with families in mind, the festival focuses on interactive experiences that help kids connect with nature in meaningful, hands-on ways. Think less lecture, more discovery.
What to Expect
Expect a day that feels like a blend of outdoor classroom and community festival.
Across the park, dozens of booths will offer kid-friendly activities, simple crafts and interactive exhibits centered on nature and the environment. Kids can wander from station to station, choosing what sparks their curiosity most.
There is plenty of open space to explore, plus live music throughout the day and food trucks if you plan to stay through lunch.
More adventurous kids may head straight for the rock wall, while others might prefer sensory activities or live animal encounters. The best part: there’s no set schedule, so families can move at their own pace.
Know Before You Go
A little planning will help make the day smoother.
This year, there is no onsite parking except for handicap parking, so plan ahead. A satellite parking lot behind the PNC building on Germanic Street will be available as well as free shuttles to and from the festival throughout the day, though walking or biking is often the easiest option if you’re able.
The park is stroller- and wagon-friendly, and restrooms are available on-site.
Plan to dress for a spring day outside. Bring water, sunscreen and anything else your family typically needs for a few hours in the park. It’s also a good idea to check the weather before heading out. Bring an umbrella or poncho if it's raining.
And yes! Leashed dogs are welcome, making it an easy full-family outing.
Why Families Love It
Earth Day on the Rappahannock is one of those rare events that feels simple to say yes to.
There’s plenty to keep kids engaged, but nothing feels overwhelming or overly structured. Families can explore at their own pace, linger where they want and skip what they don’t.
More than anything, it’s a chance to be outside together, let kids explore freely and open the door to small conversations about caring for the world around us.
And in the middle of a busy spring season, that kind of day is always worth making time for.
