Fredericksburg’s Very Own Santa Mailbox

Dec 02, 2025 11:30AM ● By Amanda Danaher

Downtown Fredericksburg glows with extra holiday cheer this time of year, and one of the most beloved sights sits at the corner of George and Caroline Street: the bright red Santa Mailbox. Families come from all over the area for a chance to slip in their letters to the "Big Guy" at the North Pole. Thanks to volunteers from the Rappahannock Rotary Club, every child who writes receives a personalized reply from Santa, Mrs. Claus, or one of the elves.

Bringing the Santa Mailbox to Fredericksburg

The mailbox has grown into a treasured local tradition, sparked by the imagination of retired orthodontist and dedicated Rotary member, Dr. John Coker. After reading about a similar program in an alumni newsletter from Ann Arbor, Michigan, he saw an opportunity to bring something magical to Fredericksburg. With help from the Rotary Club, he launched the Santa Mailbox eight years ago. In seasons past, more than 1,800 letters arrived, and each one was carefully answered by Rotary members writing on Santa’s behalf.

Building a Legacy of Community Joy

This local holiday highlight is only one example of the joy Dr. Coker has brought to the community. He is also the creator of the annual Scarecrow Fest events that bring families downtown every October, including the Scarecrow Contest, Treats on the Streets, and a Halloween movie night. In addition, he founded the Rotary’s popular Pancake Breakfast, held on the morning of the downtown Christmas parade.

Throughout the years, Dr. Coker has been recognized for his enthusiasm for family, community, and celebration. He often dressed up for holidays at his office and is well known for his playful spirit. As a grandfather, he stays just as involved. He coaches his grandchildren’s sports teams, reads in their classrooms, and keeps a closet filled with toys, puzzles, and games just for them.

Fredericksburg continues to benefit from Dr. Coker’s creativity and countless hours of service. The Santa Mailbox remains a favorite holiday stop for local families and brings a sense of wonder to downtown each December, adding a touch of magic that makes the season unforgettable.
