Helping Hands Inc. in Stafford has helped children develop the skills they need to get the most out of life for the past 15 years. Treatment is offered for autism and related disorders, developmental delays, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, visual processing disorders, premature and high-risk infants, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, spina bifida, sensory integrative dysfunction, sensory processing disorder, traumatic brain injury, feeding disorders, and more. The staff works with parents and families to educate them about their child’s diagnosis, treatment and therapeutic options.
Therapists help families understand the child’s challenges to increase a positive result for treatment and improve their quality of life. By providing families with knowledge and resources that make them empowered, the therapeutic services for children have an increased impact. Helping Hands offers occupational and speech therapy, and therapists are trained and certified in programs such as therapeutic listening, primitive reflex integration, handwriting without tears and life skills management.
The Helping Hands Private Day School was created by occupational therapists and educators who have seen children struggle with the classic education model. The school focuses on teaching children in a way they can process and retain the concepts taught. Therapy techniques are incorporated into the general curriculum to increase attention, awareness and success. They include sensory integration therapy, speech therapy and the Social Thinking Curriculum.
Helping Hands is a training and mentoring institution for many renowned schools, including Howard University, James Madison University, Eastern Virginia Career College, Virginia Commonwealth University and Jefferson College of Health Sciences. For information about training and mentoring at Helping Hands, contact Sydney McDonald, volunteer/student coordinator.
Voted second place for Special Needs Services in Fredericksburg Parent & Family magazine’s Family Favorites in 2018, Helping Hands is devoted to providing excellence in therapy.
