Looking for an easy getaway that packs in the fun for all ages? Charlottesville, just over an hour drive from Fredericksburg, offers an unforgettable day trip with its blend of culture, history, and family-friendly activities.
Whether you’re into exploring museums, enjoying the outdoors, or trying some tasty bites, this charming town has it all.
“I think a visit to Charlottesville should include a mix of town and country,” says Jennifer Bryerton, M.A.Ed., publisher of CharlottesvilleFamily Magazine and co-author of the daytrip book, Let’s Go! Guide to Charlottesville. “I’ve been collecting events and outing ideas for over 25 years now and these are perennial family favorites!”
So here are seven local gems you won’t want to miss while you’re there!
Downtown Mall
Virginia Discovery Museum
A must-visit for families, the Virginia Discovery Museum, located at the east end of Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, encourages hands-on learning for all ages. With exhibits exploring art, science, history and nature, it’s the perfect stop for families looking to mix fun with educational activities.
University of Virginia
For free family fun, you won’t want to miss the grounds of the University of Virginia. Designed by Thomas Jefferson and steeped in history, the campus is as educational as it is beautiful. Plus, kids will love hunting down Edgar Allan Poe’s dorm room, which is preserved as a quirky historic site.
Bryerton suggests mixing fun with history at UVA: “Take a walk at the beautiful grounds at UVA. Find Poe’s room. Play a little Pokemon Go! See what the students are up to.”
Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection
Don’t miss the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia, which Bryerton calls a “one-of-a-kind experience.” It is known as one of the world’s top collections of Indigenous Australian art outside Australia. While you’re there, explore over 2,000 works, including bark and acrylic paintings, sculptures, photography, prints, and artifacts!
“Being a petite museum you don't need lots of time and it is sensory friendly,” explains Bryerton.
Bodo’s Bagels
Charlottesville is known for its foodie scene, and even the pickiest eaters will find something to love. While you’re there, be sure to stop at Bodo’s Bagels, a local classic, where you’ll find fresh, made-from-scratch bagels that are perfect for a quick and satisfying bite.
McIntire Park
If the weather’s nice, consider visiting McIntire Park. With its mountain views, outdoor playground, open fields and trails, it’s the perfect opportunity to let the kids blow off some steam while you enjoy the scenery. Plus, it boasts a skate park, streams and even wooded areas to explore.
King Family Vineyard
Wrap up your day trip with a visit to one of Charlottesville’s family-friendly wineries. King Family Vineyard provides breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a relaxing spot for families. Kids can enjoy open spaces to play while parents unwind with a glass of wine. While you’re there, enjoy food trucks, trivia nights, and even their seasonal family-friendly events. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, don’t miss the polo matches—a unique experience that’s fun for everyone.
Whether it’s exploring nature, marveling at art, indulging in delicious food or savoring a quiet moment with a glass of wine at a family-friendly vineyard, Charlottesville has all the ingredients for a perfect day trip. What are you waiting for? Pack up the family and hit the road—your next adventure is just a short drive away!
As Bryerton put it, “Charlottesville is packed with family fun!”
