Have a Blast at MASSANUTTEN

Sep 16, 2024 12:42PM ● By Brandy Centolanza

Looking for a last-minute getaway before school resumes? Massanutten, which celebrated 50 years in 2022, may be more well known for its skiing, but the mountain resort offers up so much more for young and old alike. There’s something in store for the whole family to enjoy, so pack your bags and get ready for some fun.

Indoor/Outdoor Waterpark

Massanutten features a waterpark with attractions both indoors and out, including a variety of waterslides, a wave pool, and a lazy river, with cabanas available for rent as well as food options for those who plan to stay the whole day. In March, the resort announced plans to expand its amenities at the waterpark, which will include a 144-room hotel adjacent to the park. The project, which is slated for completion in 2026, will add 6,000 square feet to the waterpark on one side and 22,000 square feet on the other. Several new attractions are planned as part of the upgrades, including a three-lane, headfirst mat racing slide and a family raft ride with lighting, sound, and design effects, as well as an enhanced kiddie area for little ones with pools and slides, a larger wave pool, and a dining terrace.

Family Adventure Park

Thrill seekers will want to check out the resort’s Family Adventure Park, where they can partake in ziplining, rock climbing, and summer tubing. This fall, Massanutten will also introduce a new attraction at the adventure park, a mountain coaster that will span 3,380 feet and cover 2,156 feet of terrain. The coaster will reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and have two 360-degree spirals along the track. Riders can ride in a single or double car and will have full control over their speed during the six-minute ride.

Close by, families can go-kart or ride bumper cars, or take a respite from their adventures at Perfect Break, an indoor entertainment facility with Topgolf Swing suites and e-sports computers for gamers.

Other Activities

Seasonally, Massanutten hosts a farmers market on Wednesday mornings with local vendors and live music. If you are still up for adventure, Massanutten also has a mountain bike park, with e-bike rentals and tours available. Or, families can try their hand at fling golf, a fun hybrid of golf and lacrosse. Massanutten leads the country in rounds of fling golf played, 2,500 annually.

If you are prefer something more low-key, there are two escape rooms, including an Egyptian-themed room and the resort’s newest room, which opened in June, called The Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition. The new room is a nod to the history of Massanutten and the surrounding area. Next to the escape room building is Balanced Roots, where families can enjoy a relaxing afternoon creating their own terrariums and fairy gardens.

Massanutten also boasts a spa, fitness center, arcades, playgrounds, and several pools. There are two main dining options, Campfire Grill and Base Camp, which hosts a Wine Down Wednesday event with live music mid-week during the summer. Additionally, Massanutten has myriad lodging accommodations to choose from, whether you want to stay for a night or a few days. There are hotels as well as cottage style condos in the gated community of Regal Vistas. Certain lodging areas are dog-friendly. For more information, visit https://www.massresort.com/.
