Ever wonder what our community would look like without trees? The nature trails, parks and roadsides would be barren and industrial. The Fredericksburg area has an abundance of trees and foliage, providing residents and visitors with scenic views.

Trees, however, are more important to our lives than providing beauty. We Plant Trees, a philanthropic enterprise that supports environmental stewardship by providing and planting native trees regionally, is a 501(c) charity organization in Fredericksburg. Its goal is to halt the buildup of carbon dioxide through carbon sequestration (the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide). It also helps insect pollinators like honey bees to provide a healthier, more sustainable environment.

Founded by father and son Doug and Erik Davis in 2019, the organization has planted more than 10,000 trees, particularly in the Northern Virginia area.

“Our mission is to inspire others and cultivate a better world for our children that counters world trends, such as global warming,” said Megan Eastman, nonprofit projects coordinator. “We’ll work to help create a future that considers and incorporates sustainable environmental practices into everyday life. With the community’s help, we can promote planting as many trees as possible, with each tree growing and sequestering carbon.”

We Plant Trees also works with other state conservation groups, including the Friends of the Rappahannock and the Goose Creek Association in Middleburg, Virginia, where more than 750 trees were planted in the Goose Creek Watershed.
