Halloween Safety Tips for the Whole Family

Halloween can be a really fun time, what with all the dressing up and eating too much candy. Even mom and dad can get in on the loot with the candy tax. (You know, you tax the candy haul so you get some goodies, too!)
But for real, Halloween can be downright scary when someone gets hurt or left behind.
Here are a collection of tips to make it a fun and enjoyable time for your little goblins.
For Kids –
1. Have the kids wear costumes that are easy to walk around in. Pin or tape up any loose bottoms.2. Consider using face paint instead of masks that obstruct eyesight.
3. Add reflective tape to the back of costumes, and wear or attach a blinking light (such as a bike-safety light) to strollers or wagons.
4. Give the kids a flash light if the neighborhood is not well-lit or to help them feel more comfortable.
5. For older kids, have them travel in groups and tell an adult their route. Make sure older children know an adult’s phone number for emergencies. Have an adult travel with the group for less mature groups.
For Parents –
6. Have a well-lit path to your front porch.7. Clear debris and any trip hazards from the walk-way.
8. Put up the pets (and keep the candy away from them too).
9. Headed to a festival or other community event? Put a paper-type wristband with phone number on the little ones in case you get separated.
10. Got a big group? Pair up the kids with their Halloween buddy. Do an occasional head count to make sure no one gets left behind.
11. Know your neighbors – as we know, not all neighbors host trick-or-treaters. Show children which houses to visit and which to skip. This tip applies for safety reasons as well.
12. Consider keeping nut-based candies in a separate bowl for those with allergies. Check out the “Teal Pumpkin” for alternative treats.
For everyone – check those wrappers and candies. Enjoy the candy collection, y’all. Happy Halloween!
