Grymes Responds to Obama's Call for a Day of Service
Grymes Memorial School students on the Student Leadership Council Community Service Committee helped to deliver and serve lunch to the residents of Sheltering Arms on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Two children from first through fourth grade joined in the delivery, service and visiting. Junior kindergarten and kindergarten students prepared the "stone soup" in class on Tuesday, Jan. 12, as kindergarten teacher Angela Sadler read the story. Students in first grade prepared dessert and students in third and fourth grades prepared sandwiches. The second-grade class prepared toiletry bags with toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, washcloths and a card. Head of Grymes Memorial School, Penny Work, read Stone Soup to the residents. In addition, the students in fifth grade are collecting shoes for the homeless, and the all students brought canned goods for the food pantry in exchange for a "dress down" day. The community service projects at Grymes are in response to President Obama's directive for a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King. Grymes Memorial School will be in session on Martin Luther King Day and students will attend a special assembly in honor of him. For more information, please visit www.grymesschool.org.
