Keegan Allen stars as Toby Cavanaugh in the ABC Family hit television series, Pretty Little Liars. While the plot of the show is dark, mysterious and complicated, Allen is not. He's a typical twenty-something with a budding career and a world of opportunity awaiting him. A believer in hard work and gratitude, Allen open up and shares his thoughts on acting, life and his commitment to his craft.
How serious is acting to you?
I always carry a camera with me everywhere I go. I just did a film with James Franco and saw how he directed it and it was interesting.
What about the Pretty Little Liars casting call caught your attention?
When I first got on the show I knew that there was a series of books to it, like Harry Potter, Gossip Girl and Twilight. I knew people would see it because it already had such a huge following, but we've made the storyline more addicting. And now, we're shooting season 4.
What's it like to be a sensation among teenage girls?
I'm really happy that people responded positively to my character. In the book series, he dies in the second book. He's written into such a pivotal role as the antagonist of the series with more twists, which we've never seen in other characters.
I'm happy that people have responded positively to my choices. [My fans] are very important to me and to the show.
What's a typical day like on the set?
I show up early and have this weird thing where I'm scared of being late ever. They instilled that in me in college. I learned that if you're early, you're on time; if you're on time, you're late; and if you're late, you're fired.
So I check all my materials to see if there were changes, go to hair and makeup, talk to the girls and shoot the show. Then I stuff my face with chocolate croissants and go home.
Are you close with your fellow cast members?
I'm close with everyone. It happens to be a very interesting set. The friendships are deep and amazing. I have friends who have been on successful TV shows and they say that this does not happen. You don't get along with everyone, but we do. I've made my best friends on this show. It's a pleasure to hang out with all of them.
Are you anything like your character, Toby?
I exhibit some of the stuff that Toby has gone through, but I'm a 360 of that character. He's very troubled and I'm none of that. Actually, I based [my acting of ] him off of someone I knew growing up. That's my little secret because I still see him from time to time.
What twists can we expect rom the show?
This show is geared towards twists and turns and we can expect more of that. That's the addiction. It builds up. So many revelations happen each season that revolve around 'A' and who killed Allison. We find that out and more. This is going to be a very interesting season.
Who is 'A'?
We found out that Toby was 'A' and then we found out that it's a hierarchy. It's very much a team of people. But I really don't know.
How important are good relationships to your success?
Having solid friendships is related to you being a good person — a nice person. If you're genuine, you'll have great friendships. There is still humanity to our business. Where there are good friendships, there is teamwork. It adds to the process of making what we do so special.
What were your challenges as a teen? What advice do you have for our teens?
I had a really tough time in high school. But I followed my passion. If you're interested in something you just do it. Don't let anyone swerve you. High school is really just a nostalgic blur in the end. Bullies get the short end of the stick and it all subsides when you get older. Your passions will pay off, just believe in yourself, trust yourself and keep real friends around.
What advice do you have for young people who want to pursue acting?
If you decided to pursue acting, make sure it's something you really want to do. There is the perception about Hollywood that if you come out here you'll get discovered. It's a lot of hard work. Troi [Bellisario] and me, we're still in school. I still go to college. I still go to workshops. It's all about the amount of work you put in to it. You can't say you want to be rich and famous. It's an art. You have to put your heart, mind, body and soul into the trenches. It's hard work. If you can do that, then follow your passion. It will pay off.

What is a rainbow? Why do the stars twinkle? Why is the sky blue, and the sunset red? How can optical illusions simply trick our brains into seeing things which may or may not be real? You rely on optics, the science of light everyday - your digital camera, wireless mouse, and even your Blu-ray disc of your favorite movie are all technologies enabled by the science of optics. The special properties of light can be used to explore the universe, monitor the environment, and even solve crimes.
You can start your exploration of the science of light by attending these hands-on activities, play with animations, or just stare at the colorful pictures - you are guaranteed to find something that will make you go hmmmm.

Come Read For A Reason
Help Turn Bullies into Buddies And Make World Record History
This Holiday, put an end to school bullying once and for all. Take a stand and come read The Legend of Captain McFinn, a black tip reef shark and a former bully. Take the Bully pledge and be a part of making Spotsylvania World Record History.
What can be more satisfying, or educationally important, than reading to young children? Spotsylvania Towne Centre, B101.5, and FredParent will honor that wonderful activity by inviting parents from all over northern Virginia to
participate in Read For A Reason. This special family event will take place on Saturday, December 17, at 10:00am at Muvico at The Village at Towne Centre. Registration takes place from 8am to 10am at Books-A–Million! (You can pre-register below to help us speed up the process on Saturday morning.)
Characters from the Captain McFinn & Friends Kids Club will be on hand to greet the children. To add to the fun, we’re shooting for a world record! A representative from the Guinness World Records organization will be on hand to certify it as “The most parents reading to their children in a single location.”
Readers must bring proof of guardianship, (Birth Certificate or Adoption papers) PLUS a valid Photo ID.
Help Set a World Record!
Join Our Attempt To Put Spotsylvania On The World Records Map
To add to the fun, we’re shooting for a world record! An official representative from the Guinness World Records organization will be on hand to certify it as “The most parents reading to their children in a single location.”
Your reading "team" will consist of only one parent and one child, but you are welcome to bring all your children along. To help us set the world record, the more PARENTS we have, the better, so bring your husbands and wives, and tell your neighbors to come and read, too! You'll find the reading selection in the center of the December issue of FredParent. (The child can be any age up to age 16 to qualify as a "child" for the purposes of the world record.)
B101.5 will be broadcasting LIVE from Muvico that morning! Come be a part of history!
This is what you'll need that morning at the check-in table:
Each parent reading to each child needs to have all of this. So if you have 2 parents and 3 kids that morning, you'll need birth certificates/paperwork for 2 kids plus photo ID's for both parents.
