Spotsylvania Education Foundation Back to School Block Party

By Scott Lyons

The Spotsylvania Education Foundation will host its first annual Block Party Sunday, August 9, as part of the Spotsylvania Towne Centre’s Back to School Weekend. In addition to sales tax exemption, participants will enjoy extended shopping hours, special savings and a wide array of fun activities for the entire family.

The Spotsylvania Education Foundation was established to generate advocacy and financial support for our Spotsylvania schools.

The Foundation’s mission is to supplement, not replace, the school system’s own resources. So it focuses its work on enhancing a student’s educational experience in ways that normal curricular activities cannot.

The Block Party will be the first special event held in the Towne Center’s new Village area. Participants will be able to enjoy the Village’s traditional street setting with its fountains and flowers during the 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm outdoor segment. Then people will go inside the mall for some serious bargain hunting during the 6:00 to 8:00 extended shopping hours segment.

Outdoor activities will include crafts tables, musical entertainment and a parade led by a combined drum corps representing all Spotsylvania high schools. There will also be remote broadcasts by radio stations Thunder 104.5 and Oldies 95.9

With the theme “Sharing Pride in Spotsylvania Schools,” the Foundation wants everyone to participate. So attending families will be invited to join the parade behind banners representing each of Spotsylvania’s schools. We will also present a Battle of the Bands in cooperation with the Guitar Center. Bands representing each of Spotsylvania’s five high schools will compete for the first annual Top Dog award, with a plaque going to the winning school Hopefully students will come out in droves to root for their school’s band.

Admission to indoor extended hours shopping will be $10.00, with half going to the Spotsylvania Education Foundation and half going to the PTA, PTO or other Block Party partner at a school designated by the purchaser. More than 35 stores have agreed to stay open late, including most of those on teenager favorites lists.

Besides gaining access to special after-hours bargains, ticket holders will have an opportunity to learn about the school system’s many unique programs and special achievements—and get advance word on certain information that would normally not be available before school starts. Tickets can be purchased at the mall information desk or online at www.scs.k12.va.uswww.scs.k12.va.us
