Editor's Note - October 2008 Every kid is a Cover Kid! It is only days away: the Cover Kids Contest & Baby Fair is Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m.-4p.m. at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. Of course we love beautiful babies, but we are looking for characteristic, unique personalities which are a representative selection of the Fredericksburg area. All participants in the Cover Kids Contest will receive a photo reproduction (a mock) magazine cover, and in addition, a specially priced photo package will be available. Each participant will receive a bag of goodies. There will be six 2009 Cover Kids, and six runners up who will be featured inside Fredericksburg Parent and on the September issue, 2009. The six runners up will be given photo shoots to illustrate articles within the magazine and would appear inside or would appear collectively on the September, 2009 issue. The six Cover Kid winners will be given photo shoots which exemplify a month’s theme or feature, and would be featured on the cover one month. The cover artist, Rosanne Rainville of Rose Photography, has just received her Master of Photography from the Professional Photography Association of America. Winners will be contacted directly by Rosanne Rainville for the photo shoot. She will match each child to a month’s theme. Photos will be taken near the month in which it is planned for publication. More than one child may be on any given cover. Register online. $15 per child if pre-registered. $20 per child at the door. To register by mail, send the enclosed form with payment to: Fredericksburg Parent, Cover Kids Contest, P.O. Box 7884, Fredericksburg, VA. 22401. Inside this month’s issue, we focus on health issues for our families, and delve into an area which our readers have requested more information. Area writers discuss preterm babies and the NICU, planning for preemies, and natural options to care for mothers and infants. Guides to local agencies, caregivers, online resources, and so on, are included. Experienced local mothers share their stories, and advise on the realities of preterm maternity, labor, and delivery. Alternative types of human health are highlighted in Family Values this month. The discussion of television and its effects on children and families is in focus. Television for child rearing is called into question. Tools for changing television-based households are provided. We hope families will benefit by refocusing time and attention to children and towards a healthier family life. May we be reminded to stay focused on our families, grateful for our health, and sensitive to the gifts our children give us each day.
