Bright Beginnings Craft Fair. 9am-2pm. Massoponax High School, 8201 Jeff Davis Hwy. Free. Bright Beginnings is a ministry for teen parents through Salem Fields Community Church. The craft fair will benefit the Program for Teen Parents, a program of the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB). All proceeds from the purchase of vendor spaces benefit the Childcare Assistance Fund, which enables teen parents to finish high school by supplementing the cost of daycare. Last year, 21 students benefited from the Childcare Assistance Fund. According to Parent Educator, Joan Gillis, “Supporting the Childcare Assistance Fund is a great cause. We’re trying to give our parenting teenagers every opportunity to finish high school and to become great parents.” For more than 15 years, the Program for Teen Parents has provided school and home-based education and support for pregnant and parenting teenagers in Spotsylvania County. Their mission is to facilitate healthier pregnancies, healthier babies, and nurturing relationships between parent and child. The program assists teens prior to the birth of their child and offers continued support until the child is three years old. Parent Educators offer educational groups, infant massage classes, and Lamaze classes. There is no charge for the programs. A total of 121 teen parents from Spotsylvania County benefited from the Program for Teen Parents in fiscal year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008). For craft fair registration information, or to learn more, visit www.racsb.state.va.us. Smart Beginnings Rappahannock Area (SBRA) invites you to learn more about their collaborative initiatives on November 21, 2008. The event will be held at the University of Mary Washington’s College of Smart BeginningsGraduate and Professional Studies (Stafford Campus: 125 University Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22406) from 1:00 to 1:30. You are also welcomed to stay for more of the Ready for School Readiness Regional Discussion as your time permits. This investment reaps extraordinary benefits not only for each individual child, but also for our communities, our workforce and our economy.

The Virginia Early Childhood Foundation has selected SBRA as the recipient of a $100,000 Getting Ready Grant to be used over a two-year period for a number of early childhood initiatives. Smart Beginnings Rappahannock Area is a community partnership created to address the needs of young children (0-6) in order for them to be successful in school and later in life. Smart Beginnings Rappahannock Area brings together over 40 partners from the public and private sectors to increase school readiness in our region. Rappahannock United Way is the lead organizer of the community partnership.

You are invited to learn more about collaborative programs and services that support young children in our localities and across the Commonwealth.
