Care That Comes to You

Apr 06, 2024 11:18AM ● By Emily Freehling

It’s a fact of life. Raising kids involves dealing with sickness from time to time. When a child has a sore throat, earache, fever, cough or other telltale symptom, nothing should get in the way of putting them on the path to healing—especially not the difficulties of getting in the car and driving to a healthcare provider.

According to the American Hospital Association, approximately 3.5 million U.S. patients go without care each year because they cannot access transportation to providers. There are many barriers that hinder parents from visiting a doctor before a minor illness becomes worse, like finding childcare for siblings, taking extra time off work and potentially picking up a new illness in the waiting room of the doctor’s office.

DoorStep Urgent Care is an innovative new healthcare option that seeks to solve the problem of convenient, healthcare for parents and children in Fredericksburg as well as Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. DoorStep is a mobile pediatric clinic that brings its state-of-the-art medical service vehicles to your doorstep to administer best-in-class healthcare to children ages 6 months to 18 years.

Backed by experience

DoorStep Urgent Care is a service of Dr. William Johnson, M.D., of the Children’s Clinic of Fredericksburg. Dr. Johnson has decades of experience in pediatric care and has served young patients in the Fredericksburg area for more than 15 years.

DoorStep was born out of his drive to better serve parents, and to ensure that children in the area get convenient access to high-quality healthcare.

Dr. Johnson has hired Scott Thomas as DoorStep’s Chief Operating Officer to help bring forth this vision.  Scott is a seasoned Fortune 50 executive with more than 20 years of innovation, marketing and commercialization expertise.

We have an innovative model that provides safety, enhances convenience and removes barriers to healthcare for parents.” Scott said. “As the local area continues to grow, we are offering this solution as a way to serve more of our neighbors with pediatric healthcare needs.”

How it works

Accessing DoorStep Urgent Care is as simple as picking up the phone. Call 540-472-4050, and the team will provide a time slot to expect its patient-friendly medical service vehicle at your home.  Your copay and visit are billed the same amount as an in-network visit to urgent care.  There are no hidden fees, and no subscription is required for the DoorStep Urgent Care Experience.

How many times have you spent a half hour or more in a doctor’s waiting room after your scheduled appointment time? That doesn’t happen with DoorStep. DoorStep’s nurses and healthcare professionals specialize in serving children, and your child will have their full attention once they pull up to your home.

“At DoorStep, we understand that it can be challenging for parents to fit healthcare appointments into busy lives.  That’s why we offer a convenient service that comes to you. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary healthcare promptly so that you can efficiently get back to your day-to-day activities.”, Thomas said.

DoorStep’s medical service vehicles have all of the equipment and capabilities you’d expect to find at a brick-and-mortar pediatric office. The novelty of stepping onto a brightly colored “traveling doctor’s office” may take kids’ minds off any anxiety they may be feeling about seeing a medical professional. Providers will check height, weight, blood pressure and other vitals just like at any other appointment. DoorStep can test for COVID-19, flu A/B, strep throat and RSV.

DoorStep’s team sends all of the information gathered at the appointment to Dr. Johnson, who schedules a virtual follow-up with patients and parents within an hour or so of the appointment to discuss next steps, share prescription info, and to ensure patients and parents are comfortable with the care plan going forward. Additionally, the team can provide a doctor’s note if needed for school attendance or work absence.

DoorStep currently accepts private insurance and self-pay patients. Services are provided between 8 AM – 6 PM, Monday – Friday.
